Every time I think I’m “getting it” about Jesus, I hear a parable like the one from Luke 18 that we’ll hear on Sunday. Two men go to pray — one is a righteous person, and the other is a tax collector, someone that others looked down on. Yet Jesus says the righteous one tries to raise himself up by looking down his nose at the tax collector, while the tax collector just speaks honestly, vulnerably, to God.
God doesn’t grade on a curve. God simply wants you, your faith, your struggles, your very being as you are. God doesn’t compare you to someone else. God cares about you at the core of your being.
I often wonder — what would I be like if I could simply rest in this promise? How would I treat others, especially those who feel the judgment of society (like the tax collector)? And I wonder — how to fashion our community in such a way that we share this promise with one another so we hear it in our hearts.
People of St. Timothy, God be with you as you honestly are today.
