In Mark 9, Jesus is transfigured on a mountain, and a voice says, “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him.”
The Transfiguration story has so many delightful parts to it. For one thing, it connects to Jesus’ baptism, where he also heard a voice saying he was beloved. Where and how do you hear the promise that you are beloved, as Jesus was?
Jesus goes up a mountain to pray, discern, and listen. Mountains in scripture are “thin places” open to wonder and vision. Where do you “go” to open yourself to wonder? Outside in nature? Reading? Listening? Music? Watching a child, or a nursing home resident? The capacity for wonder is a gift we can exercise, too.
Transfiguration Sunday serves as a wonder-filled bridge between the season of enlightenment in Epiphany and the Lenten journey we take with Jesus. In this pandemic, what is helping you with the different seasons when many of our usual ways have been disrupted?
