In Matthew 5-7, Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount about a challenging path of discipleship that also brings joy, especially in times of need. Jesus said a number of times in those chapters, “You have heard that it was said…but I say to you.” Jesus engages deeply with heritage, tradition, and faith resources while listening to fresh needs of his own time. Can we do that, too?
It seems to me that Jesus models a way of honoring the insights from those who blazed a path before us while also honoring the different life experiences of people in the 21st century. Whether that pertains to musical styles or gender identity, to Bible versions or authors who have lived under circumstances quite different from ours, we have a chance again this week to listen with both/and ears.
Beloved of St. Timothy, who are people that bring you deep comfort by connecting with your long-held faith? Or what songs do so? On the other hand, who are people that invite you to see with fresh eyes, or resources that lead you to perspectives you had never encountered before? We are together on this path as we listen to Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount this week.
Peace,
Hans
