In one of our readings for this Sunday from 2 Timothy 1:5, the letter addressed from Paul to Timothy says, “I am reminded of your faith, a faith that first lived in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and now lives in you.” There are some remarkable bits that I hear in that sentence. First, in this passage Paul knows the faith of two generations of women in the early church. Paul knows the faith of Lois and Eunice, and that leads him to have confidence in Timothy.
Second, it appears that faith is more than just something for an individual. Faith lives in Eunice and Lois, and now lives in Timothy. We are not stuck “alone” with our faith, as if we have to muster it up on our own. Faith happens for us in community.
To me, that means that faith is both something alive AND something we live out. We do that together in much the same way as we learn to walk and run – with missteps and stubbed toes and falls, along with the joys of movement down a path.
Beloved of God, faith lives in you, too. This faith is alive because of the love of others in God’s grace. Who were the Lois and Eunice in your life that held you in love, and how does faith live through you as well? Thanks for the many ways you share in this journey together.
