When Jesus enters Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, there is a noisy welcome, with excitement from the people greeting him. We feel the joy shining through the humble way that Jesus promises God’s liberating love! What are the ways that your heart yearns for God’s goodness with joy and expectation?
Yet this holy week, which begins in such boisterous celebration, quickly takes a painful turn. There is something about Jesus’ humble proclamation of God’s reign that leads to deep opposition from those in power. It makes us wonder: how do we struggle with the thought of God’s goodness scattered freely outside usual boundaries?
This holy week brings us deeply into the gospel’s heart, which shows God’s compassion for us and for all. The week goes through stories replete with joy, community, service, violence, and sadness. Be gentle with yourself and with others this week. It can be a profound and meaningful time, but it can also touch difficult feelings where we feel uncertainty or pain. Talk to others. Hold one another in grace. Listen. Breathe in this promise: Jesus enters our world to go through everything with you. For you. We are together.
Peace,
Hans
