As the people of Israel were hungry in the wilderness and complaining to Moses, God promised, “I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day” (Exodus 16). This is a central Biblical story of hunger, of community, and of God’s generosity for enough. The people didn’t know what to make of it. They still struggled about it. Yet over time this became part of the Lord’s Prayer – “Give us today our daily bread.”
What are your hungers that you experience these days? Think of physical hungers as well as other hungers of your spirit and life. How do you share them with others?
When have you experienced “enough” even though it was not perfect? What role do others play in your having enough? How do you help others in their need for enough?
The bread may have “rained from heaven” but it didn’t fall into their laps. The people needed to gather enough for their family (however that was viewed). How is this passage about the role of community in sharing God’s generosity?
