Jesus and Authority

In Mark 1, it says “Jesus taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.”

What does it mean for someone to teach as “having authority?” Authority can come from outside sources, which is why our society pays attention to diplomas or resumes where we assess external valuation.

However, in spiritual matters, we often prioritize internal authority. The authority that comes from one’s own being. In fact, the word used in the Greek New Testament has its root in the word “being” itself! In English, the root word is “author,” so one who is the author of their life has a certain authority.

When we listen to those who have experienced being homeless, they teach “with authority” from what they know. When an Indigenous person speaks about the racism they face, they teach “with authority” from their own life.

In Mark’s gospel, Jesus teaches as one having authority, from his own being. I believe that is not limited to the human being 2000 years ago; I believe Jesus keeps teaching with authority. We keep learning how to listen to a wider array of voices with authority who teach us across race, gender, age, and status. How has your understanding of authority changed over the years?

People of St. Timothy, thank you for continuing to seek to explore and live in the depth of Jesus’ teachings for our day.

Peace,
Hans
