We often want to know what a scripture passage means. Sometimes it is enough to notice how it feels. I find this to be the case with a reading from Matthew’s gospel that we will hear this weekend. Jesus tells the disciples that God’s reign will be like ten bridesmaids waiting for the groom to come to the wedding. Some had enough oil for their lamps, others didn’t, all became drowsy and fell asleep. Jesus ends by saying, “Keep awake, for you don’t know the time.”
Well. It’s a bit disconcerting. That story is eerie, difficult, confusing. Sometimes we search for a clear answer, an easy meaning. I’ve learned at times that it is enough to notice how it feels.
When I face endings in life, I don’t like them. I don’t like separation, or loneliness, or finality. When I contemplate on endings, I feel some fear. What about you? What do you feel?
And then, if I am still and slow down, I feel something else – gratitude for this moment. Gratefulness for opportunities today, for people in my life now, for possibilities to be alive. I believe Jesus joined us at the lowest, hardest part of human existence in solidarity with what we experience. I believe the cross shows that in starkness. And I believe that Jesus’ resurrection gives sight beyond what I can see now.
With the bridesmaids, I am waiting and watching. I’m grateful to be in that watchfulness with you, beloved of St. Timothy.
Peace,
Hans
