Merciful to All

In Sunday’s gospel, Jesus says to a Canaanite woman, “Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish!” (Matthew 15:28).

Canaanites weren’t often seen as heroes of biblical passages, yet this woman persists in pushing Jesus till she gets a blessing. Notice how often the scriptures push us to notice people who otherwise go unnoticed (women, children, foreigners, poor, or sick).

As we prepare to note the 100th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage in the United States, what other ways can you name or research the impact of women who kept pushing for equity and shared blessings?

What are ways that you keep persisting to push Christ to extend blessings beyond our usual boundaries? They may seem humble, but God still works even through this unnamed women in the gospel reading.

Peace, Hans
