This evening I get to see one of my favorite musicals, “Into the Woods,” and perhaps my favorite song from any musical, “No One Is Alone.” The song comes when, after disastrous consequences for each lead character’s individual “wish” coming true, those who remain finally recognize their interconnectedness with each other. And perhaps most importantly, that those big bad villains they have faced — even witches and giants — are connected with them, too.
What is it about our interconnectedness that we forget so easily, preferring instead our own individual fairy tales? This week we also hear from Paul in the letter to the Romans, words that sing out like a soaring refrain: “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
This is perhaps the most important message we can remember and share about our God. That no matter our stories—whom we make out to be heroes or villains, however high we are flying or low life brings us — God draws near. You are not alone. No one is alone.
With you on the journey,
Liesl
