In Jonah 3:1, it says, “The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time…”
The first time Jonah heard God’s word, he went in the opposite direction of what God asked. I imagine that you can resonate with this. Sometimes we don’t want to go where it seems we are being nudged, or to do what seems right before us. Yet God does not give up.
In the comic story of Jonah, after days in a “great fish,” Jonah tries again. God’s word comes a second time. God does not give up. How have you experienced second chances in your life?
As we begin an election year with all the stresses that go with it, it is important for us not to give up, but to keep listening (like with Jonah). God does not give up, even when things are tough. Take a few minutes to sit. Notice your body on a chair, your feet on the ground. Smile gently. Breathe in God’s mercy for you. For today. Breathe out whatever worries are there. Do that cycle once more.
People of St. Timothy, there are times when we do not know how to process what’s happening in our life or our faith. Yet God’s word comes “a second time” to us as to Jonah, and we can listen afresh. I am grateful for your persistence and faithfulness!
Peace,
Hans
