Sent Into the World

In John 17, Jesus prays about the disciples, “As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.”

John 17 conveys a long prayer for oneness and shared mission. In John’s gospel, Jesus is praying on his last night for the disciples (and onward for us). This passage shows how Jesus’ mission was to be “in the world” as it is. How do you think Jesus was sent?

What does it mean that you are sent “into the world” like Jesus was? Does that sanctify your everyday relationships and responsibilities?

How does this prayer affect your perspective of being involved in issues of school, work, political life, or society?

Friends of St. Timothy, we don’t have clear answers about how to act “in the world,” but it helps me to journey with people like you who are trying to engage this world today. Thanks for sharing your struggles and care.
