In Luke 4 as we begin the season of Lent, we hear the devil tempting Jesus, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread.”
The story of Jesus’ temptation is rich for all of us who feel tempted in our lives. The temptation to try to be something “other” than the human beings we are can be difficult. For Jesus, it was the temptation to do magic or to gain control over others or a superstition that he could be immortal. Yet Jesus came to be fully human, and in that way redeems us.
How do you face temptations to be something “other” than yourself? Do you compare yourself to others?
What helps you to come to yourself again? How do you hear God’s affirmation of your uniqueness and cherished identity as you are?
People of St. Timothy, take time to notice all that tempts us away from our being human and make space for the human nature that Jesus shares with us. As we begin the season of Lent, we notice how Jesus journeys with us through life and death toward a new life.
