After Easter, the disciples didn’t know what exactly to do. There wasn’t a clear plan after Jesus’ resurrection, so they went back to doing what they knew to do. John 21 says, “Peter said to the other disciples, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.”
They caught nothing.
That’s what it says in the gospel. That phrase falls with a dull thud. They fished all night-Christ was risen-and still, they caught nothing! Does your life ever seem like that? Even when you hear good news that warms your heart, even when something happens that makes you smile, even in those moments where everything seems to come together, you can still feel like the disciples. They caught nothing.
What happens next is that the disciples meet the risen Jesus at breakfast on the beach, but they still don’t totally recognize him or make sense of it all. The good news that I hear in this gospel is how Christ still comes to feed us. Christ still comes to guide us. Even if it will take A LOT of breakfasts to get this message through to us, Christ still comes to nourish us.
Friends, as we begin to taste the budding of springtime, you are in my prayers that God will feed your whole being with what you need today. Thanks for your persistence in being disciples.
