In our tradition, we make space on Maundy Thursday to remember central parts of our faith story. We hear about the Passover meal in Exodus where we remember God’s deliverance of the people from enslavement. We hear about the communion meal where Jesus promised to be present in, with, and under the bread and wine. We hear about Jesus’ last supper, where Jesus bends down in servant-style to wash the feet of his disciples. These offer a vision of what God desires for us together.
Then on Good Friday, we focus on the final hours of Jesus’ life, knowing that God joins us at the lowest, very worst place of betrayal and condemnation. Saturday is a quiet day where we wait. Even when we know good news of Easter is ahead, these three days can be difficult. So we gather in whatever ways we can around the cross, preparing ourselves for what we can hardly imagine.
God is not done. Neither are we.
Peace,
Hans
