How do we deal with hard news that challenges the way we’ve usually thought? Do we say “No, that can’t be” at first? Do we ask those around us what they think? Do we go and do further research? It can be hard when we’re confronted with something that challenges our assumptions.
I try to put myself in the disciples’ place in Matthew 16 when Jesus tells them that he will suffer, be killed, and be raised. That must have sounded strange to the disciples, and it didn’t fit their ideas or hopes for what Jesus would be. Peter said, “No! That can’t be!” Jesus just went on to talk about taking up their cross and following him.
It’s 2023, long after this episode. I am still trying to follow this Jesus. The one who went to the cross, the one who showed a way of love that transcends our mortal limits, the one who invited us to follow in a journey marked by solidarity with others as we seek God’s self-giving love. I am still trying, but each day it challenges me. Thank you for your willingness to be part of a community that seeks to live into this way of living that is shaped by cross and resurrection. I’m grateful for your companionship and witness!
Peace,
Hans
