This Sunday we hear Matthew’s account of Jesus’ transfiguration. As Moses and Elijah had major mountaintop experiences, so did Jesus. On the mountain, Jesus had an experience where Moses and Elijah spoke with him in brilliant glory. If you’ve ever had a dream or experience that seemed wild, the Transfiguration story fits that. Then a cloud covered them, and it was just Jesus again. Mountaintop experiences are not meant to last, but they can sustain us through other times.
After that episode, a heavenly voice said about Jesus, “This is my beloved son, with whom I am well-pleased, listen to him.” That is very similar to the heavenly message at Jesus’ baptism, and somehow also connects to what the centurion says when Jesus dies on the cross – “Truly, this man was God’s son.”
People of St. Timothy, are there times when you hear in the core of your being the promise that you also are God’s beloved children? How does that sustain you for difficulties you face? How does it help us to know God’s message from baptism through mountaintop experiences and even in the cross of life? You are not alone, for Christ is with you through all these. You are God’s beloved children.
Peace,
Hans
