As the season of Epiphany continues so does the theme of baptism and its unfolding in our lives. Paul writes to the Corinthians, who are struggling with their allegiances to God, to each other, and to the gods of the Greco-Roman culture that surrounds them. I can relate! In our world where shame and division are the norm, where the stakes of our public stances are so high, it’s easy to lose track of what, and who, determines our worthiness for love.
Beloved, the good news is that God already claimed you as their own, as long ago as the goodness that God spoke over creation, and as recently as the breath you just took in. If that feels too vague, look to your own Baptism as the day and time of this sacred promise. Light a candle. Give thanks to God for the people who surrounded you that day. You are already, always, loved and claimed by God. Alleluia.
